How to take the next step in your executive career

For many senior professionals, the hardest move isn’t the first promotion, it’s the one that comes after years of experience, when you're ready to step up again but unsure what that looks like or how to get there.
Whether you're eyeing the boardroom, aiming to expand your leadership remit, or simply seeking fresh challenge and purpose, progressing your career at an executive level often requires a different approach than earlier in your journey.
Here are some practical tips to help you prepare, and position, for that next big move.

1. Define what ‘next’ looks like for you
Are you chasing more responsibility, better alignment with your values, a new challenge, or all three? Clarity is key. Executive opportunities aren’t always advertised, so you need to know what you’re looking for, even before you see it in writing.
2. Reframe your CV for leadership
At this level, it’s not about tasks it’s about impact. Think strategy, influence, commercial growth, transformation, team leadership. What did you change? Improve? Grow? Your CV should speak to your leadership brand and showcase your ability to deliver at scale.
3. Get visible (the right way)
Whether it's updating your LinkedIn presence, attending events, or quietly making your interest known, visibility matters. Decision-makers are more likely to approach those who are actively engaging with their industry and signalling ambition in the right way.
4. Use your network, and go beyond it
While word of mouth and introductions still matter, many senior roles never make it to open job boards. Working with a trusted recruitment agency that specialises in executive-level roles can give you access to discreet opportunities and strategic advice that your wider network can’t always provide.
5. Choose your recruitment partner wisely
Not all agencies are created equal and at this level, you need one that understands nuance, confidentiality, and long-term fit.
At Search & Select, we’ve been placing senior talent for over 25 years and have built trusted relationships with the Island’s leading employers. From Managing Directors to Heads of Function, we understand the executive landscape and how to guide you through it.

In summary...
Progression doesn’t always mean louder. Sometimes, the smartest move is a quiet one: a conversation, a connection, a change in mindset.
If you’re thinking about what’s next in your leadership journey, we’re here for that conversation, confidentially, professionally, and at your pace.
