Assistant Scientific Officer

• High level of practical laboratory skills including aseptic technique and including sampling of common materials (food & water), and understanding of considerations necessary to prevent contamination of samples.  
• Technical competence, able to meet the required testing performance standards as a matter of course.  
• Personality and interpersonal skills suitable for dealing with the public and clients, by telephone and face-to-face contact.  
• Practical ability to handle and use equipment in a safe and correct manner.  
• Reliable when working, particularly when alone to organise work to achieve maximum efficiency on work both inside and outside the Laboratory.  
• Ability to learn new techniques with normal training.  
• Sufficient knowledge of methods to be able to train/mentor other staff.  
• Ability to work in an orderly manner and follow documented procedures.  
• Basic computing skill (training can be provided).  
• Knowledge and familiarity of operation of quality systems and quality control procedures relating to tests, and ability to assess the suitability of test results using acceptability criteria.  
• The use of balances and volumetric glassware are a fundamental requirement of the role, as is some understanding of microbiology terminology. The role holder must either have these skills or be willing and able to learn these rapidly within the post.  
• Current driving license.
